Batik preservation faces challenges from globalization and changing fashion trends, particularly as some Generation Z members perceive batik as outdated and formal. This study aims to analyze Generation Z students’ perspectives at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) regarding batik as a national identity and to examine wearing batik as a manifestation of patriotism. This qualitative interpretive descriptive study involved 20 Generation Z students aged 18–24 years selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using an online open-ended questionnaire and analyzed thematically based on cultural reproduction. Four themes emerged: batik as national identity, students as cultural preservation agents, wearing batik as an expression of patriotism, and cultural reproduction through fashion and digital media. Students perceived batik as cultural heritage representing national character. Everyday use, modern design innovation, and digital promotion reflected active youth participation in maintaining batik’s relevance. Batik preservation on campus represents a cultural reproduction process that connects traditional values with modern lifestyles and serves as a dynamic manifestation of youth nationalism in the digital era.
Rolly GusnandaKezia Dwina NathaniaSyaqina Anindia GusviNoriko Adinda City ChitakoNayla Akmala FahrunisaKhayra Aulia Kalehaisy

https://journals.unikal.ac.id/index.php/canting/article/view/906

The batik industry faces challenges due to the shift toward synthetic dyes, which negatively impact the environment. While natural dyes derived from Bixa orellana seeds are eco-friendly, they typically exhibit low color strength. This study aimed to enhance natural dye uptake by modifying the surface of cotton fabric using chitosan as a biomordant. Cotton fabrics underwent pre-mordanting with chitosan (at concentrations of 1, 1.5, and 2.5 g/L), followed by dyeing with Bixa orellana extract and fixation with alum. Color strength was analyzed using a spectrophotometer to determine K/S values. Dyeing with Bixa orellana seeds yielded colors ranging from yellow to orange; higher chitosan concentrations resulted in a deeper orange hue. The results showed an increase in color strength from 1.436 (without chitosan treatment) to 4.153 (at a concentration of 2.5 g/L), representing a 188% increase in color intensity. Ionic interactions and hydrogen bonding between the chitosan, fabric, and dye enhanced color affinity. Chitosan proved effective as a biomordant—with an optimal concentration of 2.5 g/L—thereby supporting a more sustainable natural dyeing process in batik production.
Rachma Tia Evitasari

https://journals.unikal.ac.id/index.php/canting/article/view/998

Traditional batik is an Islamic communication medium laden with spiritual values based on divine fitrah. However current artificial intelligence intervention has reduced human creative processes into machine computation. This qualitative conceptual philosophical study applies Gadamerian Hermeneutics to analyze this landscape disruption. The text analysis deepens using the books of Al Hikam and Adabul Alim wal Mutaallim. Study results show that generative technology intervention triggers the desecration of batik motif dawah values. The prompt engineering process is proven to remove sincerity creating profane visual commodities. Human machine collaboration also cuts the cultural sanad chain prioritizing patience and meticulousness. Consequently the artisan aesthetic authority collapses and shifts into the black box of computational algorithms. As a resolution step this research offers a new idea named Post Digital Resacralization concept. This concept asserts that machine design blueprints must be returned using manual canting. This re humanization effort injects back the room of dhikr and aesthetic human imperfection. This vertical synthesis ensures modern batik remains submissive under the control of divine values.
Samsuriyanto Samsuriyanto

https://journals.unikal.ac.id/index.php/canting/article/view/1069

Yasshirly AmriaYan Yan Sunarya

https://journals.unikal.ac.id/index.php/canting/article/view/1123

The tree of life is one of the common motifs developed by regional batik artisans, particularly in batik-producing areas with a strong historical background. Tulungagung has a distinctive batik tradition influenced by both keraton and pesisiran styles, making it one of the important centers of batik production with a long historical development in East Java. This study aims to examine the visual diversity of the tree of life motif in the batik tradition of Tulungagung. The study employs a qualitative approach, with data collected through literature review, interviews, and observation. The primary data consist of Lengko Babaran Gajah Mada batik motifs produced by artisans in the Majan area. Data analysis involved the stages of data collection and classification, interpretation, and identification of relationships among the data. The findings reveal twelve principal design models employed within a single piece of batik cloth. The visual representation of the tree of life is constructed through the combination of sulur-suluran and buketan, integrated with a rawan background motif, a stylization of swamp-like features associated with one of the water sources found in the Tulungagung region. Unlike the conventional representation of the tree of life as a large tree extending vertically upward, the tree of life motif in Tulungagung is represented through the integration of sulur-suluran and buketan with a water-source motif. This distinctive visual construction demonstrates a unique local reinterpretation of the tree of life and enriches the visual diversity of the motif within the Indonesian batik tradition.
Ony SetyawanAndi Irawan
